Jafar's Staff
Aladdin

This iconic piece from Disney's Aladdin was made primarily of wood and fiber glass. Due to its length, the staff had to be turned on a lathe out of two separate poplar blanks which were then joined together. For the head, a side profile was made using vector editing software, then printed out and divided into multiple smaller components. These were then affixed to pieces of poplar with spray adhesive and cut on a bandsaw. Once glued together, the shape of the head was further defined using a combination of angle grinder, rotary tool, and hand sanding. The smaller details such as the eye sockets and mouth were carved by hand. After the staff and head were joined, the entire piece was placed into an armature where the hood was sculpted around it in oil clay. Fiber glass was then laid into the sculpt and blended onto the body. Once removed from the armature the remaining details of the hood were sculpted with epoxy clay. Both the teeth and the eyes were sculpted with epoxy clay and molded with simple open face molds. The teeth were cast in urethane resin and glued into place. The entire piece was then primed and sanded until a uniform finish was acheived. It was painted in two layers; a solid base coat of gold and lighter top coat of copper. Finally the eyes were cast in transparent resin and their backs painted with metallic red model paint before being glued into place.
