Zeus Class Fusion Pistol
Marathon

This piece from Bungie's 1994 Mac game Marathon was made to be a display piece, so weight was not a concern. To save costs it was therefore constructed mainly of wood and MDF. Blueprints with orthographic views of the pistol were created using vector editing software, then printed and cut into individual components. These were affixed to the wood and MDF with spray adhesive and cut out on a bandsaw. The pieces were then shaped using a combination of router, orbital sander, and hand sanding. The parts with more complex curves were sculpted in epoxy clay and blended with the rest of the piece. Once all the individual components had been assembled into the main body, additional details were added with heat formed styrene, PVC pipe, wood screws, and textured primer. The entire piece was then primed and sanded for a uniform finish. The majority of the piece was airbrushed with a blend of acrylic paints mixed to obtain the the correct in-game color. The silver and gunmetal parts were painted with a metallic lacquer, which was then buffed to a sheen. Weathering was achieved using a mix of dry brushing enamels and several washes of oil paints. The various texts and logo were created using vector editing software. The logo was cut from adhesive vinyl on a plotting machine and everything else was printed onto water slide decals. The entire piece was then given a satin clear coat for uniformity and protection. Finally, since the LED's did not need to be functional, they were 3D modeled and printed in transparent red SLA resin. They were then wet sanded and polished before being glued in place.
