Nanachi's Helmet
Made in Abyss

This helmet consists of two major parts, a bone like front piece and a more traditional Stahlhelm-style back. The master of the front was made of EVA foam which was cut, heat shaped, and carved into a base form. It was then coated with a two part resin designed specifically for applying over foams to create hard, durable shells. Onto this details and more complex shapes were added with epoxy clay. The small horns were 3D modeled separately and printed in more durable PLA due to their delicate shape. Once they had been attached, the entire piece was then primed and sanded multiple times until it had a uniform finish. The master of the back was carved and shaped from layered polystyrene blocks. It was then fiberglassed and sanded smooth. Brush on molds were made of both the front and the back. The back was a simple open face mold but the front had to be made in a two part mold with a four part jacket due to the complexity of the shape. They were each cast using urethane resin. The back was slush cast but the front required a rotocaster due to the weight and size of the mold. The interior of the front piece was then filled with expanding foam for durability. The masters for the eyes were 3D modeled and printed in SLA resin, which were then wet sanded and polished. After molding they were cast in a transparent resin and hand painted with a mix of acrylics and enamels. The back of the helmet was painted with a metallic lacquer, which was then buffed to a sheen. The front was airbrushed using lacquer based model paints. Once all pieces had been assembled, the finished product was given several coats of weathering with oil paints and dry brushing before receiving clear coats.
